Lest anyone begin speculating that my collecting greed is dissipating, let me remove all doubt: Yes, I did indeed purchase this bright green Spartan Warrior Funko POP! Vinyl SDCC 2013 Exclusive figure in addition to its yellow companion. I lauded the Halo 4 Spartan Warrior (Yellow) POP! Vinyl exclusive in my review of it a few weeks ago, and while I don’t like this green Funko variant Spartan to the same extent, I still think it’s pretty good…
The Right:
While not as wacky as the bright yellow Spartan Warrior with silver visor, I’m glad to have an opportunity to own a generic Spartan Soldier designer vinyl figure that isn’t the same-old red or blue armor that companies love to fall back on producing.
Not to repeat myself too much, but everything that I said about the sculpt of the Spartan Warrior Yellow vinyl figure in my review of that figure still stands. I love the super-deformed chibi style of the Spartan Warrior helmet, and I’m especially pleased with the amount of sculpting detail that Funko put into the back of the armor.
While the exclusive Funko Halo 4 Yellow Spartan Warrior figure came armed with a plain old DMR as a weapon, the Green Spartan Warrior gets a UNSC Railgun. With the Railgun and the Spartan Warrior armor permutation both being created new for the Halo 4 video game, the choice of weapon that comes with this figure is a natural fit that makes perfect sense.
Like its yellow Spartan vinyl companion, I appreciate that Funko went to the trouble of modifying all of the box art for the green Spartan Warrior to show the proper-colored Spartan figure on the box. In most cases, Funko just applies a sticker to the box of its variants without changing a thing about the box itself, so it’s a real treat that Funko put actual effort into the SDCC 2013 Halo exclusives’ boxes.
The quality control on this SDCC 2013 Funko Exclusive Halo 4 figure is exemplary–the figure is solid and stands up with no problems, and the swivel-head joint is tight and can turn 360 degrees without restrictions. The paint apps are all clean and well-executed, with no obvious paint slop or uneven lines anywhere on the figure.
The Wrong:
Seeing as how only three Funko Halo Spartan figures have ever been mass-released (red, blue and the dark green Master Chief), it’s a letdown that Funko chose to make one of the 2013 San Diego Comic Con exclusive Spartans with a color scheme that’s fairly similar to that of the Master Chief. While this Spartan is a fun lime green color, he’s still green with a gold visor, the same as the Funko Master Chief POP! Vinyl figure.
In addition, there’s a lot more of the Railgun showing on this figure than the DMR that came with the Yellow Spartan Warrior Funko figure, and it looks rather plain. With the Railgun being decently large and thick, I feel like Funko could have managed to put just a few paint applications on this gun so that it didn’t have to look so bland. It’s not a deal breaker, but it is an area that could be improved.
“Where Can I Buy It?!”
There were only 480 Funko Halo 4 Green Spartan Warrior POP! Vinyl figures produced and released at San Diego Comic Con 2013 last month. You can still find the Funko exclusive Spartan Warriors for a very fair price of under $20 each shipped on eBay, but with the production run being so limited, these are sure to get a lot more expensive in a very short amount of time.
Overall: If we were either going to get no SDCC Halo exclusives this year from Funko or these yellow and green Spartans, then I’m glad we got these Warrior Spartans. While the green Spartan Warrior vinyl figure isn’t quite as unique as the yellow Spartan Warrior was, it’s still a good-looking super-deformed Spartan figure that I’m glad to have on my shelf. I’d have rather this figure had paint deco on the Railgun and a more interesting color scheme, but it’s a great complement to the yellow Spartan Warrior POP! Vinyl and a worthy potentially final figure in the Funko Halo POP! Vinyls figure line.
Is it really good for such a “rare” figure to be submerged in sand and dripping wet? Also, is it safe to get the Mcfarlane and Mega Blocks Halo figures wet/sandy/dirty? Will the paint come off?
Is it “good” for that limited-edition Spartan to be submerged in sand and dripping wet? Well… no.
Is it fun to do so? Very much so. =D
As for the Mega Bloks and McFarlane figures… I just wash the Mega Bloks figures off and they’re totally fine. I wouldn’t bring McFarlane Halo figures into the sand for photos, though–I feel like their paint is too delicate and liable to get scratched by the sand.
Thanks, good to know! 😀 Also, when will you be reviewing the UNSC Cobra? I’m very excited to see it with such a detailed review as yours usually are showcasing it, and I’m considering buying it.
Hey david do you have the cobra yet?
