Halo Mega Bloks 2013 Covenant Combat Cobalt Unit Review 97084

I reviewed the UNSC Cobalt Combat Unit earlier this year, and now it’s the Covenant’s turn to get all decked out in Cobalt blue armor–it’s the 2013 Halo Mega Bloks Covenant Combat Cobalt Unit 97084! My hopes for this set plummeted when I learned what the four figures included in it were, but the paint deco is so good that it almost makes up for this set’s shortcomings….

2013 Halo Mega Bloks Covenant Combat Cobalt Unit 97084

The Right:

Whatever ways this set disappoints me, the gorgeous Cobalt paint is not among them. While we got a blue Covenant Assault Unit previously, that set had very flat and uninteresting blue paint. This Halo Mega Bloks Cobalt Covenant Combat Unit has a shiny, metallic-like cobalt blue as its themed color, and it looks killer. This is probably the best that the Grunt that debuted in 2012 has ever looked, and if I didn’t have to buy the other figures in this set to get more, I’d seriously consider army-building Cobalt Grunt figures.

Halo Cobalt Covenant Combat Unit 2013 Mega Bloks Figures While it’s not my favorite Covenant figure by a longshot, I think the Jet Pack Brute is an alright figure to put in this set. Though it’s still undersized and under-detailed, we don’t get Jet Pack Brutes very often, so this is a mild “right”. The excellent cobalt blue paint makes the figure look much better than usual, and this is the cheapest set to ever feature a Jet Pack Brute, making it a good choice.

Halo Cobalt Covenant Combat Unit Back 2013 Mega Bloks FiguresI teetered on the edge of sticking the weapons in this set into “The Wrong” out of frustration that this set includes yet another purple Plasma Rifle instead of the Brute red Plasma Rifle, but the weapons barely manage to make it into “The Right”, as the Mauler is my favorite Halo gun ever and I also like the idea of an Active Camo Needler. Needlers are a popular weapon that we never get enough of, and I guess I can deal with another purple Plasma Rifle. It really burns me up that it isn’t the red Brute version of the Covenant Plasma Rifle, though…

Halo Mega Bloks Covenant Cobalt Combat Unit vs. Master ChiefThe Wrong:

We just got Covenant Combat Unit 96912 with two blue Brutes and a Grunt last year. I don’t own that set, but it pretty much haunts my dreams, because well over a year later it’s still flooding the pegs at each and every Walmart in my area. So seeing a rehash of that set (albeit in much nicer blue paint) shipping to stores throughout 2013 does not do my heart good. I hope that MEGA Brands is packing this Covenant Combat Cobalt Unit lightly in cases, because my expectation is that this will not be a popular set at all.

Halo Mega Bloks 2013 Cobalt Covenant Combat Unit In BubbleI don’t mind the Jet Pack Brute (much), but I utterly hate the regular Brute figure. I thought it looked awful back in 2009 when it debuted, and four years later I still loathe it. The Brute Chieftain is a huge improvement on the standard Mega Bloks Brute figure, and I honestly think this Cobalt Combat Unit would have been drastically more anticipated if it had come with a repainted Brute Chieftain instead of yet another of the old, obsolete Brute mold.

Mega Bloks Halo Covenant Cobalt Combat Unit 97084 Package BackAnd as with the UNSC Orange Combat Unit I previously reviewed, I’m not crazy about including an Active Camo figure in a Combat Unit. It’s novel to own an Active Camo Grunt, but I certainly wouldn’t want to army-build them. An Active Camo Elite Zealot or Elite Assault would have been a much better and more logical choice.

Packaged Mega Bloks Halo Covenant Cobalt Combat Unit 97084“Where Can I Buy It?”

I couldn’t wait until these Combat Units hit mass retail in mid-January, so I ordered my Covenant Combat Cobalt Unit from BA Toys. It’s not my favorite unit, but I’m just too impatient to wait for my new Halo Mega Bloks.

Overall: This is far and away my least-favorite of the early 2013 Halo Mega Bloks sets. There are no new molds or weapons in this set, and my absolute least-favorite Halo Mega Bloks figure (the standard Brute) is present. I guess my real beef with this set is the question: “Why?” We got a blue Covenant Assault Unit with Brutes and a Grunt that stores still can’t seem to get rid of, and I’m worried this set is going to be a similar blight in the Halo Mega Bloks aisle. I really do love the look of the shiny Cobalt blue paint, particularly on the 2012 Mega Bloks Grunt figure mold in this set, but I don’t know that that’s enough incentive to make this set sell well at retail. With a weird Active Camo figure choice and another obsolete Brute figure included, this Halo Mega Bloks Covenant Combat Cobalt Unit 97084 is a rare Halo Mega Bloks set release that I find to be somewhat below average.

  1. you complaint about not getting a red plasmas rifle, but apparently you didn´t look closely because this IS the brute plama rifle

    • The Brute Plasma Rifle is a very strong red color–the Mega Bloks Plasma Rifle included in this set is a purple/maroon color that doesn’t look anything like the Brute Plasma Rifle in the Halo video games. It’s not as purple as some of the other guns MEGA Brands has given us, but it’s definitely not the proper red.

  2. If I were Mega, I would have put in a Cobalt Halo 4 Zealot in place of the Standard Brute, and opted out the Active Camo Grunt entirely for a Cobalt Jackal or Skirmisher.
