The third and expected to be final item in the Toys R Us exclusive series of Covert Ops Halo Mega Bloks themed sets for the fall finally turned up this weekend: the Halo Mega Bloks Covert Ops UNSC Wolverine 97072!
We’ve seen the UNSC Wolverine twice before, but this is the first time that we’ve seen it in cool, stealthy black paint. But this slick new black UNSC Wolverine Mega Bloks set comes at a heavy cost: $55 + tax. Yes, that’s right: $55 + tax. For 330 pieces. When the Arctic Wolverine is still selling for $32.99 and barely even moving at that price. Let’s get real here, Toys R Us–that’s outright ridiculous. But I digress–let me talk about this set a little bit more despite my outrage…
Unlike the previous two Halo Mega Bloks UNSC Wolverine sets, set 97072 includes only one figure: a Covert Ops HAZOP Spartan. Whereas you got a much-coveted Hunter with each of the previous Wolverines, you’ll just have to do without here for the extra $20+ Toys R Us is charging. It’s obnoxious, but if you want this cool new Wolverine, it can’t be helped.
It’s not all bad, though! This set may look like a straight-up reissue of the previous two UNSC Wolverines that have been released (plain green and Arctic), but it actually has an improvement over both of those releases: refined upper armor. A communications antenna has been added to the vehicle, and the front and sides of the armor have been streamlined to make the vehicle look more authentic to its appearance in the Halo Wars video game.
Personally, I still dig the (shelf-warming) Arctic Wolverine the most, but the Covert Ops Wolverine looks exceedingly striking in its black paint scheme. Toys R Us is running a Buy One Get One Half Off sale this week, so I’m going to try to hunt down a Halo Mega Bloks Covert Ops UNSC Wolverine 97072 of my own to review before the sale ends. Because honestly, I am not willing to pay $55 + tax for a slightly altered build of the old UNSC Wolverine.
