I am a total sucker for arctic-themed anything. As a kid the arctic G.I. Joes were always my favorite, I loved the battle of Hoth, and I bought every crummy “snowy” variant with a couple specks of paint randomly thrown on a figure by the manufacturer. So yeah–clearly it’s no surprise that I was completely infatuated with the UNSC Arctic Cyclops 97107 mech the moment I saw it. It’s been nearly half a year since we first saw the photos of the Arctic Cyclops and my expectations have been very high for the mech, but now that I have it in-hand, I’m almost totally satisfied with it…

The Right:

When packaged photos of the Halo Mega Bloks Cyclops sets first hit the Internet, a lot of fans decried that these weren’t “true” Halo Mega Bloks sets, as the Cyclops mechs looked to be totally pre-assembled in the package. But that’s not really the case.

97107 Mega Bloks Halo Arctic Cyclops Out of Packaging Yes, it’s true that this freshly-opened Halo Mega Bloks Arctic Cyclops looks fully built already, but that’s actually only partially true. This set is 63 pieces, and most of them do need be assembled. A lot of the pieces of the Cyclops haven’t been pressed into place yet and are just sitting in the bubble next to the main body. Furthermore, none of the pieces of the flamethrower weapon or the backpack it attaches to have been built at all yet.

Halo Mega Bloks Arctic Cyclops Instructions SheetNow, I’m not saying this is a complicated or thrilling build or anything, but the Cyclops Mega Bloks build will take 5-10 minutes to complete and is a lot more fulfilling than the “build” of the Halo Mega Bloks Drop Pod sets that these seem to be replacing on shelves.

Once built, the UNSC Arctic Cyclops is loads of fun. I thought the Cyclops would have maybe four or five points of articulation, but I’m actuality is has twelve (thirteen if you count the opening canopy hatch). This is more than I expected and realistically all the articulation that could be integrated into a mech like the Arctic Cyclops.

We’ve seen this figure mold repainted dozens of times, but I do really like his arctic white paint deco. More importantly, though, he comes with a painted Battle Rifle! Maybe I wasn’t paying attention, but I was unaware that the weapons the pilot figures would come with would have paint deco. It’s only one gun, but the paint makes it a very welcome addition.

There’s really very little to complain about with the Halo Mega Bloks Arctic Cyclops 97107. The Arctic Marine figure is a shade darker than the Cyclops, so I’m not sure he’ll blend into the landscape properly, but that’s a pretty minor nitpick. Devastating Flamethrower on UNSC Arctic Cyclops Halo Mega Bloks MechThe Ridiculous:

The primary weapon of the Arctic Cyclops mech is its “devastating wrist mounted flamethrower”. Sounds pretty awesome, right? Well, the only problem is that the flame that comes out of the “devastating” flamethrower is this puny, pathetic little piece. Seriously–it’s about the same length as the Mega Bloks Needler. You might as well walk up to the Covenant and pistol whip them, because this flame is just sad.

I got my Halo Mega Bloks Arctic Cyclops (and the other three UNSC Cyclops) from BA Toys, which has the Arctic Cyclops and the whole set in stock now (although they are almost sold out at the point). I’ve heard about these being spotted at Target stores as well, but mine haven’t reset the aisles and put out any Summer 2013 Halo Mega Bloks sets yet. Your mileage may vary.

Mega Bloks Halo Arctic White Cyclops PackagedOverall: The Halo Mega Bloks UNSC Arctic Cyclops 97107 is easily the Cyclops Mega Bloks set I was anticipating the most of the Cyclops series, and as a whole I’m not disappointed. The UNSC Cyclops figure itself is far more articulated than you’d think at a glance, and is tons of fun to pose and move around. I can always use more Arctic UNSC Troops for army-building, and I was pleased that he came with a painted Battle Rifle weapon. The Arctic Camouflage paint deco on the Arctic Cyclops itself looks really nice, and the only true negative about this set is the tiny, sad looking little flame that comes out of the flamethrower. If you’re like me and love snow-themed toys and arctic battle figures, you’re going to love the Arctic Cyclops–you might just need to mod the flame so that it’s not quite to pathetic.

  1. I don’t think the flame is actually what it shoots. I think that it is the “lighter flame” that ignites the fuel as it is shot out of the flamethrower.

    • Sorry for the poor terminology, put I hope you get my point. I’m guessing that the flamethrower might actually shoot from that tube above the ignition flame.

      • That may be true, but I’d still like some sort of fire effects piece if so. The fact that there’s an itty-bitty flame there makes it look a bit strange.

        • I was expecting you to review the booster frame before th cyclops and i thougt you’ll start with the attack one but i understand that you are an artic fan

          • Stealth Attack Cyclops will be next. I’m trying to take it out for photos with proper evening lighting, but we keep having these pesky thunderstorms every day that are getting in my way…

        • This doesnt has to do with the review but: The pelican, cobra, hornet, and gausshog have been delayed to augost!

  4. Well, I live in Aussie, but the halo stuff on ba toys 4 ba boys is a decent price, but the damn shipping costs $147.50!!! I mean, how could the shipping be more pricy than the products?

    • Naw. I haven’t ordered it, but what I was planning to order was that box full of stuff in one of dabid’s reviews (the booster frame sets, the battle packs, the weapons packs) and the artic and stealth cyclops, and yeah, the shipping costs more than the stuff. Like I said, I live in Aussie, QLD, so, it’s just sad. 🙁

    • Thanks for the suggestion, but like I said, I live in Aussie (Australia), and amazon’s ( i’m talking about the ebay like site, not the actual jungle) in USA (I think), so the shipping’s as bad as ba toys. Just plain sad. Might have to wait until my birthday (which is soon) for my dad to get it for me… Or until it becomes out at target or toys r us or even big W… 🙁 pilain annoying and sad…

          • Nah. To me, I think they could probably be able to make a better set like the mammoth or something else, but probably not until late Christmas. Or even 2014.

  9. Truly in halo megabloks I only really like the figures and weapons. I have a whole lock box filled with them (lock box was the only box I could find that could hold them). I usually only like the wharthogs or drop pods as vehicles. Im not a big fan of the vehicles but the cyclopses seem pretty small and portable so thes might be perfect for Spartan mini storage!

    • Me too! I only like the figs. Annoyingly, to get the good and coolest figs, you have to buy a really expensive set. Like the red socout/recon in the rhino.

      • That’s why I get all the big sets for Christmas and use my earnings for the smaller sets. An example was of Countdown, It had lots of figures but a huge vehicle so I got it for Christmas. I didn’t even build the set but instead I built the ship chief flys in halo 4 in the last level!

  11. Ugghh my target sucks they still have stuff from 2011 and its sickening!!! Today I was going to try to get all 3 of the new weapons packs but they weren’t there! Instead there was the revenant, snowbound combat set, skirmisher set and,(this is crazy) they actually had the new brute chopper there! wow at least they have something relatively new.(I have the chopper though). This really, really angers me! Now ill have to wait for 2 more weeks to get it and I have to beg my mom to go to the other target all away across town! Oh well I try to order them from BA toys. that’s probably more reliable!

    • Nosmrgreen, where do you live? If you live in USA or Canada, then order it! But if you live somewhere else, like me ( I live in aussie ) then don’t order by ba toys. It is wwwaaaayyyyy too pricy.

  15. Im 16 but I love collecting theses things! Regardless of what anyone says about my age and the fact that I still buy a supposedly childrens toy, Halo Mega Bloks are damn good fun!
