New Halo 4 Play Arts Kai — No New Figures Shown at SDCC 2013

One of the companies I was most looking forward to seeing new figures from at San Diego Comic-Con is a company that’s quickly becoming one of my favorite toy manufacturers: Square-Enix. Well, the good news is that Square-Enix brought tons of new Play Arts Kai figures with them to SDCC 2013 this year. The bad news is that even with the dozens of licenses they brought new figures with them for don’t include a single new Halo 4 Play Arts Kai figure…

SDCC 2013 Halo Play Arts Kai Figures Display

I’ve been holding out on reporting on the Square-Enix Halo 4 Play Arts Kai line’s San Diego Comic Con 2013 line since SDCC Preview Night on Wednesday because I didn’t want to believe that Square-Enix hadn’t brought a single new Play Arts Kai Halo 4 action figure with them to the show. But days past, San Diego Comic-Con 2013 is now in the books, and the sad truth is that Square-Enix didn’t make up even one new figure for the show.

Square-Enix Assassin's Creed Play Arts Kai Ezio Figure at SDCC 2013 In past years we would have at least had a convention exclusive Halo Spartan Play Arts Kai repaint figure, or just saw a repaint of something period, but that was not to be in 2013. Instead, Square-Enix brought all kinds of prototypes–both new worldwide and newly displayed in the United States–but nary a new Halo figure to be found.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I personally don’t feel the need for a super-poseable $60+ Star Trek Play Arts Kai Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) figure, but obviously Square-Enix thinks that a bunch of DC superheroes in freaky armor and an assortment of Assassin’s Creed Play Arts Kai figures are a better bet than Halo this year. As you might imagine, I consider Halo Spartans a better bet than Ezio in any year, but what do I know?

Halo 4 Master Chief Play Arts Kai Figure on Display at SDCC 2013For me personally, this is a massive disappointment. It seems pretty sad that Square-Enix’s sole Halo presence in their booth was the four Halo 4 Play Arts Kai action figures that have been available for months already: the Master Chief, Sarah Palmer, Red Spartan Solider and Blue Spartan Warrior.

I won’t give up hope for more Play Arts Kai Halo 4 figures just yet, however–there’s still the possibility (however slim) that Square-Enix will debut new Halo Play Arts figures at New York Comic Con 2013 or another convention later in the year. At this point, even if we do see new unpainted prototypes for Halo 4 Play Arts Kai figures at a later convention, they won’t arrive until winter/spring 2014.

How do you feel about Square-Enix’s apparent abandonment of the Halo 4 action figure line for the rest of 2013, Halo collectors? Do you think they’re giving up too early and without giving us enough Halo 4 Spartan armor permutations, or are you satisfied with the four Halo figures Square-Enix has released in the past year?

New Halo 4 Play Arts Kai — No New Figures Shown at SDCC 2013 — 4 Comments

  1. I think that if you played the song “Heroes Also Fall” from Halo 3 while reading this thread, the resulting effect on people would be amazingly overwhelming. I almost cried! D:

    • (Since this comment was writen a long time ago and not that much people saw it here it goes again) target has the hornet IN sale both online and stores and the shipping is free. I got mine and it will arrive either tomorrow or in thursday!!

  2. Honestly, I’m not a fan of their weird stylization they feel the need to force onto every property they get their hands on, so I can’t say that I’m disappointed in their lack of any new Halo reveals. When it comes to Halo figures, I’m much more worried about McFarlane’s lack of news.

Even though I’m not a fan of their figures, I was briefly excited to see that they were doing Star Trek Into Darkness product. The new Trek movie has been lacking any real merchandise for it, so to see something new was great. Then I actually looked at the figures, and any excitement I had died. Doesn’t even looked like they tried to make them look anything like the actors, and the stylization just made them worse.I actually kind of hope they don’t attempt any of the others, in fear of how bad they would look. Most especially my favorite character Bones. Really makes me wish that Diamond Select would/could get the licensing.

  3. Like you, I was very disappointed at the lack of Halo products from Square Enix, there are certainly enough different armors variations to be made, but perhaps they decided that the armor variations won’t sell? Who am I kidding, those Star Trek figures are complete waste of plastic! I don’t see those flying off the shelves either. The DC stuff is at least interesting, I’ll give them points for creativity. But nothing that I’d even consider buying. So on the plus side, my wallet can take a break…
