Toy Fair 2013 is in the books, and with it, we now know virtually every Halo Mega Bloks Summer 2013 set that’s on the way. There are almost certainly store exclusives for Target, Wal-Mart, and Toys R Us that we haven’t seen yet, but otherwise we’ve seen pretty much everything. In this article, I’m sum up all of the Halo Mega Bloks news and set reviews from the 2013 New York Toy Fair, and discuss the biggest hits (and misses?) of the show for MEGA Brands…
I wanted to start off with my pick for the “Best of the Show”, but man–that is really tough with this particular Toy Fair. I honestly feel that the reveals by MEGA Brands this year trump what they’ve shown off at any show any other year. So instead, I’m just going to talk my way through all of them. Click on the article titles to go direct to the preview for each individual Summer 2013 Halo Mega Bloks set.
Halo Wars Mega Bloks UNSC Cobra
If you stuck a Mauler to my forehead and made my choose my absolute favorite new Halo Mega Bloks Summer 2013 set that debuted at the Toy Fair, well… it’s the Halo Wars Mega Bloks Cobra. I’ve cried, whined, and complained that I wanted this for four years, and well–now it’s being made. Could my favorite set shown off really be anything else? The Cobra prototype is still a little rough, so I certainly wouldn’t say that the vehicle is flawless, but the very existence of an in-development Halo Mega Bloks Cobra has won MEGA Brands my renewed faith and devotion.
Halo Wars Mega Bloks Covenant Vampire
The other Halo Wars Mega Bloks set to debut at the show was a brand-new Covenant Vampire. This far, far exceeds the detail and quality of the hard-to-find original Vampire, and is my “must-have” Covenant set for 2013. (I mean, I buy them all. But this is the one I’ll buy first.)
Halo 4 Mega Bloks UNSC Pelican
Probably the actual “Best of the Show” the new UNSC Pelican is based off of its Halo 4 appearance and looks supremely more accurate than the original, blocky Pelican release. This is going to be an absolutely huge seller for MEGA Brands, and almost certainly is the most-desirable of all of the Halo Mega Bloks 2013 sets shown at the Toy Fair.
The UNSC Hornet desperately needed a remake, as it was part of the sets created in the olden days when Halo Mega Bloks were, well… bad. This new Hornet misses the mark a tiny bit with its gigantic nose gun, but it still looks like it’s going to be a huge improvement over the original 2009 Hornet sets.
Halo Wars Mega Bloks Arctic Cyclops and Stealth Cyclops
I don’t know that we necessarily needed four different palette-swaps of the UNSC Cyclops, but y’know what? They look pretty darn spiffy. The Arctic Cyclops looks terrific in white, and while I don’t care for the Spec Ops-themed vehicles myself, I know a lot of fans will really like the black Stealth Cyclops.
Halo Mega Bloks UNSC Gauss Warthog (Desert Version)
Big thumbs up to MEGA Brands for giving fans for the updated Gausshog that they’ve been asking for for quite a while, but “mega” thumbs down for it being a desert-colored tan Gausshog with a desert-colored Gauss Cannon that won’t be interchangeable with non-desert Warthogs. I do love the Promethean Knight Lancer figure that appears for the first time in this set, however!
Halo Mega Bloks Summer 2013 Combat Units
On the figure side of things, 2013 looks to be by far the strongest year ever for Halo Mega Bloks figures. On the Combat Unit side of things, we’re getting figures I never expected to see released in all-figure sets, including the Brute Chieftain, UNSC Officer, Covenant Hunters, and even a Security Spartan!
Halo Mega Bloks Weapons Packs Summer 2013 Sets
The Halo Mega Bloks Weapons Packs return this spring/summer with some truly tantalizing sets, including a whole mess of the most-wanted guns from Halo 4 like the Suppressor, SAW, and Scattershot. The Forerunner Weapons Pack that includes a Watcher with Hardlight Shield is easily my favorite, but the Covenant set with its new Elite Storm figure is also another keeper.
Halo Mega Bloks Booster Frame Combinable Sets
The Booster Frame from Halo Legends is a love-it-or-hate-it type of vehicle in the Halo Universe, but I’m pleased to see it being offered–it’s a real testament to how deep MEGA Brands is going with the Halo license. Probably the biggest “miss” of the whole show for me from the Halo Mega Bloks Toy Fair 2013 offerings is the fact that you get a weird shiny teal EVA instead of a proper Kelly or Fred Spartan figure, but I do appreciate the new type of Promethean Crawler figure in the set.
Halo Mega Bloks Series 7 Mystery Pack Figure Blind Bags
Last but absolutely not least, we finally saw the much-rumored 20-figure Halo Mega Bloks Series 7 Mystery Packs figures! While I could do without another four crazy-colored clear figures and three types of Grunts, it’s hard to talk smack about a set that’s going to give us 20 all-new figures including a Human Flood, a Security Spartan, and more.
Every single one of the Halo Mega Bloks Summer 2013 sets is available for pre-order now at BA Toys. I buy all my Halo Mega Bloks from BA Toys and receive them in the mail weeks (if not months) before my local stores, so they’re my number-one top recommendation for readers to order their sets from.
So that’s a wrap, Halo fans! Which is your favorite new Halo Mega Bloks set that debuted at the 2013 Toy Fair?
Did you know that the Hornet and Vampire are one set?
The biggest let down is just how many Assault Rifles are in the Series 7 blindbags. The weapon variety in all those packs isn’t very good.
no i didnt know that
I have been collecting halo mega bloks sets since they have come out with set #96801 UNSC Turret (I still have the box), and I really excited to see all of these new halo sets out and how good they have gotten compared to when they have started. All of these sets look awesome (even though it doesn’t seem to be many sets, might just be me) and I can’t wait for them all to come out!! Also I can’t wait for the Forerunner Weapons Pack; I’m going to buy like 5 of them. 😉
Lol, I also love seeing how much the people that set up the mini-figures fail XD
The way the hornet lights up is all good but the pelican doesn’t look right at all don’t you think
what weapons do the e.od. and c.q.b. have.
they both have sentinel beams.
