I was truly blessed yesterday to have the opportunity to meet with the staff of McFarlane Toys (and someone else extra special) at the New York Toy Fair 2016 in Manhattan. Along with taking photos of the four McFarlane Halo 5: Guardians Series 2 figures that were on display on the floor of the convention center, I also got to have a wonderful conversation about the history of Halo toys at McFarlane Toys, including some facts and intel that I had never heard before. Read on, McFarlane Halo fans…
I know that this comes as a huge shock to hundreds (if not thousands) of hardcore Halo collectors in the community–as well as myself–but at the very least, we can take consolation that Halo 5 Series 2–including the highly-anticipated Spartan Buck figure–will still be released shortly.
All four of the Halo 5 Wave 2 figures were on display in both packaged and loose form at the New York Toy Fair 2016, and I took the best photos I was able to of all of them.
These Halo toys all look amazing in person, and I am definitely going to miss the astonishing level of sculpting detail and paint deco that McFarlane Toys put into every action figure that they produced.
Here’s some various facts and tidbits that I learned during my time with McFarlane Toys at the 2016 Toy Fair:
- It was not McFarlane Toys’ choice to stop producing Halo action figures. McFarlane’s license for Halo ran out, and 343 Industries chose not to renew the license, granting the new master license to Mattel instead.
- At one point, McFarlane Toys really was planning on releasing a 6″ scale UNSC Falcon vehicle, and an incredible-looking prototype for the vehicle was created. However, retailers were wary of the high price-point (likely $79.99) and thus the Falcon was cobwebbed.
- The staff at McFarlane Toys were delighted that I enjoyed and remembered the old Halo Points promotion (which, to this day, is the best mail-in toy promo of the last decade or more).
- If McFarlane Toys were to make Halo figures again–which they are absolutely NOT at this time–they would likely be in the new standard 7″ collector figure scale that the other brands like Tokyo Ghoul, Gears of War 4, Titanfall, Attack on Titan, The Walking Dead and Naruto Shippuden will be in.
- Halo 5 Series 2 is expected to have an extremely high demand due to it being the final wave in the line, and collectors who definitely want it should make sure to place a pre-order or pick up the figures as soon as they spot them at retail.
Oh yeah–I also met this guy here! A real class act, and an honor to meet at the show! Getting to meet Todd McFarlane himself (and get an autographed Agent Locke figure from him) really put the icing on my McFarlane Toys Halo collection that I will always cherish.
Halo 5: Guardians Series 2 is still available for pre-order both as individual figures and as a set of four, and I would urge any longtime McFarlane Toys collectors to place an order early for this set if they want to be guaranteed one. Tail-end series tend to be under-produced, and I don’t think anyone wants to miss out on the final action figures in the legendary McFarlane Halo toy line.
How do you feel about the end of McFarlane Toys’ Halo series, collectors? Are you planning to stop collecting Halo toys now, or will you follow the license to Mattel? And now that you’ve seen the final photos of Halo 5 Guardians Wave 2, will you be purchasing any or all of the figures in the series?
I’m out. McFarlane’s out, so I’m out. There’s no way the Mattel crap, even if they are in the same scale as McFarlane’s figures, can look anywhere close to the quality of McFarlane figures to look like they’re part of the collection. So my Halo figures collection shall forever be missing Linda, Vale and Romeo. 🙁 Well, at least there’s still Mega Bloks.
Although I did not buy a lot of the Mcfarlane halo 4 or 5 figures (just chief in cryo pod, an elite and didact) mainly because the articulation was horrid , I am still disappointed that they no longer have the license because if they had it along side Mattel that competition would have made both try harder to make good figures.
I’m hoping the articulation on the Mattel figures is good because going by photos from toy fair the figures look alright, not as good as mcfarlanes but still pretty good.
Sigh….I have mixed feelings on this. On the one hand, I’m going to definitely miss the (not always) quality and detail of McFarlane Figures. Ever since I first heard the news back during Halo 3, it seemed like a match made in Heaven. The best american (canadian) figuremaker partnering with the best american videogame.
On the other hand, alas, the Halo 3 figures weren’t all they were cracked up to be (imo) with their small chests and long legs, and even the Halo Reach Spartans appear to be small in the chest and long in the legs as I’m staring at them right now. Their figure lines have been also completely out of scale with each other, and articulation points have changed for no reason at odd times (Halo Wars Red Team, why the split swivel thighs??)
And lastly, they have been seriously skimping on the releases of Halo Figures and therefore holding back the true potential of the product line, which reached its peak during Halo: Reach. And even then, during those mass produced figures, the quality went down to a degree with sloppy paint jobs. The fact that they couldn’t even get the main characters out by or after the release of the game speaks volumes to me. Though in reality, they do this because in order to make a profit, they have to get repaints to sell, and that means packaging a must have character in the series which means holding back main characters. It’s a sad reality but an understandable one on their end. But they could’ve easily been releasing more Comic Characters (they started to with Thorne/Palmer, could’ve continued with Lasky, Fireteam Jackknife, Fireteam Majestic Ayit Sevi, etc.)
It’s somewhat flabbergasting to hear that Retailers were “wary” of a $79.99 price point on a 6″ Scale Falcon, but here we are in 2016 with a $169.99 price point for a 6″ Scale TIE Fighter. However, Star Wars is a much bigger product line, so I can see retailers being less wary of that over Halo. I don’t think the Reach line sold nearly as good as they probably wanted (or did they?), so it seemed like either Retailers or McFarlane or both scaled back on the Halo Line altogether during and after Halo 4’s release. I don’t think they sold the kind of quantity they probably wanted with the exposure to kids they can now get with Halo 5, and with the MegaBloks product in full swing, it stands to reason they’d expand on that same branding (even though the product is NO WHERE NEAR the scale and placement of Lego).
Overall, I think the move to Mattel will be good for quantity, but not good for quality. Halo 5 appears to have been produced to be more marketable for younger audiences with the Teen Rating and the “competitive multiplayer” aspects with pizza gun skins, so it only stands to reason that 343’s long arching plan is to draw that same target demographic into buying other Halo products like the “Nerf” guns and the Toys. And I can’t blame them for that, as even as an old loser fan, it does feel like a new golden age for Halo themed products, whether they’re all toys or not.
Time will tell whether these new figures can stand up to McFarlane in any aspect (So far the color choices are looking more like scaled up Mega Bloks than absolute accurate depictions). But, at least we’ll actually hopefully GET Figures/Characters, as opposed to finally getting Linda and Vale by the time Halo 6 ships, if at all.
im …not going to but mattel halo figures as they look like toys for children not collectors figures =/ just have to hope play arts make linda =/
Well we all saw this coming anyway but I will say I’m surprised that it’s because their licence ran out that they’re stopping ad not by choice.
I actually see this as a good thing because McFarlanes’ production of these figures is far and few now. Even though the quality is great and the detail is amazing, there’s just no denying that since the great times of Halo 3 and Reach that the interest by the company themselves (it seems) has severely dropped.
4 figures for a full wave now where as Reach brought out about 7-8 standard figures, multi-packs and vehicles!
Although Mattels’ products can be classed as toys whereas McFarlanes are on the higher end being collectibles, I still hold hope that this is a step in the right direction. The first wave has Linda in it which many have been wanting for a while and they’ve even got a Ghost as well showing that vehicles are on the table too.
Though the detail might not be as high, the articulation with 30+ points is a welcome change. There might finally be a hinge in that 2nd inverted Elite knee for much more dynamic poses.
We can’t really say anything until the figures from Mattel drop themselves and we have them in-hand. Picking up the Master Chief and the Elite Zealot would be beneficial for direct comparisons to McFarlanes’ variants.
As for this last wave from McFarlane, I’ll be picking up Hermes and Buck. At this ooint the sword isn’t enough to sell me the Buck repaint Helljumper ad I really don’t care for another Athlon as the Hydra Missile Launcher comes with Buck.
i think it’s safe to say we’ll all miss McFarlanes share of these figures but be open minded for the ones in future.
Like I said in the other article, I had hoped Vale, Linda, and Arbiter would’ve been made first. With Mattel, I think the quantity, variety, and playability are a plus but since I bought Halo figures for accuracy, I’m mostly out.
You can see images of the Mattel figures here

The figures are definitely toyishave and don’t look like collector’s figures. In fact they remind me of Sprukits Halo figures, especially the proportions.
Anyways, unless Mattel produces a Deluxe (and expensive) line with visual quality of McF, I’m most definitely out. Might get Linda tho.
“In fact they remind me of Sprukits Halo figures, ”
YES! That’s it! I know they don’t look right, but couldn’t quite describe it. Yes, they do look like Sprukits figures, and oversized Mega Bloks figures.
Sort of, though if any line look like Sprukits, it’s the Play Arts Kai abominations. So disappointing to see such high detailed figures with skinny japanime wastes and basketball sized joints.
First off I just wanna say that I’m disappointed for many reasons. If mcfarlane toys knew that series 2 was the last one why not go out with a bang and give fans Linda, vale and the arbiter? I wouldn’t mind the Mattel master license if we got those three. I just don’t want to come to terms yet. Not without at least trying something. What do you guys think about a petition to Mattel or whoever we need to? I know some people are done or have accepted it but why not try something?
The quality of these figures will definitely tank. pretty bummed that they only had three more to make and that would have completely my collection as well as many others. They should have just extended the contract and made the last three and all would have been happy in the collector world. Now these figures are going to look like they are just for kids and not for avid collectors.
Too bad we never got to Romeo to complete the squad.
Just picked up the set from Target. $13 a piece.
It’s out now? I’ve been looking online and in gamestop. Only preorders.
Yeah, I picked up the set from Target. But I think it was put on shelves prematurely, as the price didn’t ring up, I had to grab a figure from the last wave for them to give me that price.
Saw them at Toys R Us, but they’re $18 a piece at Toys R Us! Also saw them at Walgreens ($14), they’re hitting stores now.
This Really saddened me….If ONLY Mcfarlane could have managed to pump out a Halo 5 Arbiter, Linda, Vale, Warden eternal, Promethean Knight Strategos and Promethean Soldier before stopping halo fig production then I would feel complete. Series 1 had 10 figs, why couldn’t series 2 have 10 as well. It’s so unfair!!!!!!!! Dang 343…..Bungie always did a better job……Sigh…….I’m going to go and weep uncontrollably for hours now…..(joking)…………sigh……
Found Buck and the Athlon at Target yesterday. They wouldn’t ring up either.
Found buck and Hermes at target and the other two at toysrus. At toysrus the 10″ Locke deluxe is only $19.98. Must be on clearance now
